The classic on this subject is Freeman Dyson's Time Without End: Physics and Biology in an Open Universe(Reviews of Modern Physics, Vol. 51, No. 3, July 1979)

It is a bit aged, we really need a more up-to-date version that takes new knowledge about information theory and reversible computation into account.
