I've been struggling with this question for years. I vacillate between the "voting as validation of the system" position and the equally compelling idea that voting can be a means of turning the system against itself. I wish I could make up my mind on this. Maybe it depends on whether a real alternative is available on the ballot.
Generating theories is easy; applying them in the real world is all too often a messy affair.
