While not volunteering to "rape the rapists", the technical name for this strategy in prisoner's dilemma research is "tit-for-tat".
TFT reigned supreme in simulations until the (current) champion mutated into existence: tit-for-tat + "never give a sucker an even break"
This guy will (mostly) not cheat you first. If you cheat him, he will cheat back (eye for an eye). However, he will make occasional probes and, if he detects that you are a pacifist, will rob you blind.
Sounds pretty much like reality to me.
