I've consulted the more recent awards. Here's my list of
doubtful-to-barfworthy winners, just considering the novels:

1981:
Novel: The Snow Queen by Joan D. Vinge [eek]
1983:
Novel: Foundation's Edge by Isaac Asimov [finger down throat]
1984:
Novel: Startide Rising by David Brin [tedious]
1988:
Novel: The Uplift War by David Brin [upchuck]
1989:
Novel: Cyteen by C. J. Cherryh [yawn]
1990:
Novel: Hyperion by Dan Simmons
1991:
Novel: The Vor Game by Lois McMaster Bujold
1995:
Novel: Mirror Dance by Lois McMaster Bujold
1998:
Novel: Forever Peace by Joe Haldeman

Some of these are not at all bad, but they don't come close to being best
of the year. In the earlier years, we saw wonderful novels by Wolfe,
Aldiss, Delany, Crowley...
