The New Martians are as responsible as they could be, by their standards.

According to the last message from Earth it had been a mass attack by Jovians,
coincident with war among the Jovians wiping out any friendly ones (don't ask
me how he knew that) aimed at gaining control of the wormhole. Not that Ellen
knew all that. But then, she thought that they weren't even sentient, that
the Jovians were simulacra of consciousness. Right afterwards she discovers
she was completely wrong.
