Is it possible you may be ascribing a level of emotion to the respondent that simply does not exist? I am always amazed at how I can quite calmly think about and type out a message, and then get some reply telling me to 'calm down'. If one assumes a lack of rationality on the part of an audience, then one might read rational responses as being something else.
