You're probably thinking of Inferno (OS), Limbo (language), Dis (virtual machine), Styx (protocol)... See <http://www.lucent-inferno.com/>. It potentially could serve in the same spaces as Java, however Java came first, so Inferno seems to occupy a small niche somewhere in telecom.
