My father spent a few years trying to get funding to develop several innovative ideas, one of which was a technique for practical UV transmission. UV is very noisy but has some characteristics that make it good for high bandwidth. I don't know the details, but he's done a lot of work in signal transmission in noisy circumstances (military and civilian electronic warfare).
