During the 70s and 80s, NZ went far to the 'left' in the sense of high taxes, generous social programs, and onerous regulation. The economy and the currency nearly collapsed. In the 90s they have been bouncing back from that, and 'classical liberalism' is now popular in NZ. The trend in the 90s has been towards libertarianism, but I don't know how far it will go.
