FYI: for Mersenne, I see that the hardware requirements (for Macintoshes at least) are pretty steep, In particular, 64M of real RAM: VM substitutes need not apply. The programmer says that the swaps are very large and unpredictable so VM becomes a hard disk death march. I guess that is the price one pays for fame in the million digit number game ;-)
