So, aside from the great supernova debate, do we have any other suggestions for an extinction mechanism? Even if John Clark is right, extinction via unlucky supernova would have to be a very rare event. SF fans have been blithely assuming that spacefaring civilizations have relatively short (in cosmological terms) lifespans for a generation now. Surely someone has devoted some thought to explaining what kills them off.
