Disagree. At present, the smartest, most effective way is to not associate with individuals who have a tendency to violence.
I can give an opinion here because I come from a social background where the majority of my peers had this very same tendency. I've chosen not to remain in their sphere of influence, and therefore don't feel the need to carry a gun.
