Gregory J. E. Rawlins, of the Indiana University Computer Science dept, has
published two books relevant to the singularity (or so I gather, having
fully read neither as yet). MOTHS TO THE FLAME: The Seductions of Computer
Technology (MIT Press, 1996) can be read on-line, and a salient sample is at

and onward from that point.

Rawlins is a specialist in genetic algorithms, self-adaptive software, and
computational complexity, and his skin tone will dismay several members of
this list.

I will have the privilege of discussing the Spike with Professor Rawlins,
on 20 August, during an hour-long radio link-up between Australia and the
USA, broadcast (alas) only in Australia on the Australian Broadcasting
Corporation program `Life Matters'.
