Robin, I hate to point this out, but your either-or is incomplete.

Other possibilities exist, including: the academic research is faulty,
the interviews are of differing kinds, "success" is defined differently,
"a job" is defined differently. Those are just off the top of my head.
"If you can't think of at least three reasons, you're usually not
thinking hard enough." :)

I certainly agree that interviewing is not commonly taught and is a
bit like playing poker.
