Please join us for our second on-line conference discussing topical issues
in cryptography law and policy: "The Consent of the Governed: The
Worldwide Cryptography Debate." Presented by the Columbia University Virtual
Institute of Information (V.I.I.) and Richard Field, Esq., moderator, in
cooperation with the American Bar Association, Section of Science and
Technology.

Cryptography legislation efforts have moved ahead, in the U.S. and
worldwide. Bills currently in the U.S. House and Senate are on conflicting
tracks. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that speech on the Internet is
strongly protected, and some courts have held that cryptography is speech.
The White House has released its framework for the Internet, with special
provisions for cryptography. Major legislation has been put into effect in
Germany and other countries. Our featured participants will discuss these
and other timely issues. Add your voice to the debate and join our
featured participants, as well as other interested participants from around
the world. You can view the discussion and add your comments, all in real
time. This conference is free and open to the public. The first 30 minutes
are reserved for comments from the panelists.

Thursday, July 3, 1997, 10:00 am to 12:00 noon, EDT.
