A while ago I reponded to Barbara Lamar's comment of
"if
you're non-white, when, to the best of my knowledge, whites commit at least
as many crimes per 100 people as do non-whites.
Barbara"
With a zipped PDF document. I insted found a summary of that document here:
http://www.jeffsarchive.com/hate%20crime/The%20Color%20of%20Crime.html
about the racial demographics of crime.
In light of the current discussion, here are the results of anothe quick
Google session:
From:
http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/crimoff.htmLifetime
likelihood of going to State or Federal prison
If recent incarceration rates remain unchanged, an estimated 1 of every 20
persons (5.1%) will
serve time in a prison during their lifetime.
Lifetime chances of a person going to prison are higher for
-- men (9%) than for women (1.1%)
-- blacks (16.2%) and Hispanics (9.4%) than for whites
(2.5%)
Based on current rates of first incarceration, an estimated 28% of black
males will enter State or Federal prison during their lifetime, compared to
16% of Hispanic males and 4.4% of white males.
From:
http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/pji96.pdf
Table 3.
Selected Chararcteristics of Jail inmates,1996,1989,1983
Race/Hispanic Origin Total% Convicted Unconvicted
White- Non Hispanic 37.3 39.7 32.4
Black- Non Hispanic 40.8 38.9 44.7
http://www.decision-demographics.com/race.htm
Blacks: % of U.S. population 12
Whites: % of U.S. population 74
Assuming the above figures are correct, If I were to accept Barbara's
statement, then the jail demographics should reflect the overall population
closely. Clearly, it does not. In fact, it's not even close. Based on
this information, If I were to posit that "Blacks commit WAY more crimes
than Whites." Would that be a racist statement? And If so, why?
