I recall reading something about a strain of bacteria / algae which
had been bred / engineered to excrete hydrogen as the by-product of
its usual metabolic activities: the idea being you could place a dome
over a pool of the stuff, letting it multiple, sucking up sunlight,
and siphon off usable fuel. I don't remember the source - maybe it was
this list - so perhaps someone can point me to more information. It's
a wonderful idea if it can be made to work, but there are obvious
questions about yield and whether the tweaked version can survive
competition from its natural equivalent.
