Mirabeau's brother John was my grandmother's great grandfather (or something
like that. It's hard to keep these kinship things straight). Since
Mirabeau didn't have any sons to carry on the family name, my great
grandfather Arthur Lamar was the oldest living representative of the family
in Austin when Lamar Boulevard was built. My father was a little boy at the
time and remembers helping Arthur cut the ribbon to officially open the
street. Annette, she who taught me to read, was Arthur's wife.
There's another Barbara Owsley in Houston, BTW, married to Alvin Owsley Jr.
who used to practice law in Houston--I believe he's retired now. When I was
a kid, people who didn't know me well often assumed I was one of Barbara &
Alvin's kids since I had the same name.
