I have been an active science fiction fan since the 1960s, and in that
community -- at least in the San Francisco Bay area -- the most common
term is still "SF" (meaning "science fiction"), sometimes with an additional
"F" -- "SF&F" (meaning "science fiction and fantasy"). When one hears
"sci-fi" it is usually when either (1) the speaker is a clueless newbie,
or (2) the speaker is expressing contempt for a specific work.

But I agree with Kathryn, just as long as people read it, shucks, they
can even call it literature...
