Actually, to stay on topic, there's a very valid case where even
a single "lone ranger" type of person can make a difference: cryonics.

Now, though by no means certain that the island is really out
there, I think it's worth checking out that green spot at the
horizont.

Meanwhile, the current is dragging us right into that taifun
looming over yonder, where we will be surely whacked into
bits, and collectively become fish fodder. Meanwhile, the other
guys on this particular Ship of Fools think we should be uncorking
the rest of the wine bottles, and carpe diem, at least what's left
of it.

Now mind that I limit this specifically to this particular area.
Not nanotechnology, not AI, not space development, germline gene
engineering, or whatever else warms your extropian heart.

But in case of cryonics you can really make a difference.
It's that small a field and that important a game that every
single player counts.
