Yes, I should also acknowledge that wolves are also symbols
of evil (in Tolkien and, for that matter, Bram Stoker): i.e.,
dogs which have not been domesticated (taught to subordinate
themselves to the human pack).

Still, among domesticated animals, dogs do the subordination
thing better than cats do, and get better press for it.
