Oh, and if we're going to mention stories of this type, then
let us doff our hats to the granddaddy of all _Trek_ episodes,
_The Cage_ (remade into the two-parter _The Menagerie_).

The Talosians telepathically project experiences into Captain
Pike's mind, and he shares worlds of illusion with the other
human prisoner, Vina. As the Talosian magistrate says to Kirk
at the end of _Menagerie_: "Captain Pike has a dream, and you
have reality. May you find your way as pleasant."

NBC executives didn't know what the hell to make of this.
