Or maybe they know that they're "persons first", to such a degree that they
don't need your linguistic engineering to remind them. IMHO, "they" can
sell "you" out as much as they feel like. They are not defined by their
disabilities, and do not inherently owe any deference to your self-esteem
just because it happens to be less hardy then their own.
