There are stories of American soldiers and sailors stationed
in the various islands of the South Pacific during the war. The
economy there was based on sugar cane labor, and a typical wage
there was for as long as anyone could recall about a dollar
a day for a strong man.
When the American GIs arrived, they naturally assumed a
harlot there was entitled to 30 dollars for her services, the
same as they do in Kansas. Why should the island girls get
paid any differently? It is entertaining to try to imagine the
