While this is true, the problem is that at least some people have to
pay for it, either in traffic charges
(yes there are such accounts!) or for disk space.

Well there are always technological fixes, if you're allowed to use them. Not all ISP's, for instance will allow concealemnt of your true email address, even to avoid spam.
