If you are talking about a friend.net...
0. Plain (Fast)Ethernet. Switching hubs cheap now. Take care of ground
loops. Had at least 2 cards fried in the building yesterday since no
proper ground.
1. Line-of-sight laser (NIR-LED) links. Making PPP over an IrDa booster
should get you started. Concave cosmetical mirrors make great
improvised optics in VIS and NIR range.
2. DIY microwave cellular (can use existing LNBs/dishes?)
2.5 (uwave) HAM packet radio
3. any other ideas?

P.S. Monomode and gradient plastic fiber in pipeline now. Coherency @ GBit
length roughly 300 m, which does mean many hops.
