Any speculations on the results of a
population several times larger than the current one?

This subject is speculated upon quite extensively in The First Immortal.
By the end of the story in 2125, the Earth's population exceeds 20
billion, against a government "goal" of 26 billion humans by 2150, and
there is earlier discussion among scientists about how humanity might
eventually reach comfortably into the trillions.
I'd enjoy receiving feedback from any Extropians who read the book.
