After reading these articles, I'm convinced that artificial intelligence
will sneak up on us from behind. While AI labs labor away at trying to
create top-down or bottom-up AI, PC and network OS manufacturers will
unwittingly give rise to it by gradually making the everyday computer OS
ever more robust (widely distributed, self-optimising, self-diagnostic and
self-repairable).
While the networkable OS may not be conscious, who cares? As long as it can
perform as well (or better?) than the sentient Jupiter Brain some here are
expecting.
