I think you're giving its users too much credit. It's just a
meaningless buzzword tossed around for emotional impact; to assign
sinister motives implies that one is operating rationally to
achieve some goal, rather than just reacting.
If you're reading about some drug, you know that when you see
certain words like "burns fat" or "removes toxins" or "increases
energy" that you need read no further; they have destroyed any
credibility they might have had, and you can safely assume you're
being scammed without reading further. Likewise, when a political
opinion includes the word "crypto-fascist", you need read no
further: nothing else being said there is likely to be of value.
