The paper disgusses the feasibility of building a 22,000 mi wire to space out of carbon
nanotubes. It would theoretically be able to lift 20 tons into space at a time without
rockets.

(I just started it, so I can't give better details than that. Looks interesting, and it seems that
it won't be overly technical, for those of us without phsyics or engineering degrees.)
