The state is all involved in insurance coverage of your partner,
survival benefits including wills, medical visitation and
rights, legal power of attorney and several other issues
relevant to committed couples (not to exclude larger committed
groupings) of all types.
The discussion is about making things equitable for all. A
discussion about radically changing the role of the State in
these and other matters, while quite worthwhile, is a different
discussion.
