I heard the author, Jeffrey Hummel, speak last summer and counted myself
lucky to get one of the last of the many copies he was offering for sale.
Having heard that he had copies to sell on hand, the audience fairly rushed
Hummel after his talk. He not only gave an excellent presentation but also,
as I found when I read it soon after, has written an excellent book. Even
though I counted myself among the rare skeptics of the motives behind and
justice of the War Between the States, Hummel opened my eyes to a new
interpretation of conventional history (and, better yet, my own iconoclastic
understanding of that history).
