Fiber networks and Genomics

Since reading the excellent article that Max sent around ("The Triumph of the Light", I was wondering how a network that massive might apply to research on the human geneome. If we were to start sending genetic information across a network, what would be the size of the data file for the entire genome? How much could distributed (or metacomputing) help us in breaking the code? Anyone want to venture some estimates? :)
