The distinction was one of prenatal conditioning. Alphas were essentially
"natural borns" bred for intelligence and other desirable features. Betas
and below were treated to split the developing egg into twins (Betas) or
more "clones", and were treated with alcohol to dull the intellect. Betas
got just a touch of alky, the lower classes got more and more. More
emphasis on subliminal indoctrination than "engineering"...
