Regarding Orwell: "1984" and "Animal Farm" may have done more to further the
cause of liberty in this century than any other works of literature, in my
opinion. That they have been perennials in the public school curriculum in
the US throughout my life is a testament that even a mediocre education
system can do SOME things right.

I also highly commend one of his least-known gems, "Down and Out in Paris and
London" as a superb little bit of autobiography and perhaps the first true
work of "gonzo journalism"
