Heh. Well, keep in mind this is the pessimistic way of looking at things.
After all, we have absolutely no defense against nuclear weapons either, and
no one has nuked a city in almost fifty years. The cases aren't exactly
parallel, but it does show that potential dangers don't always become real
ones.

Personally, I think we could spend (on average) several decades in a case 3
environment before anyone would actually unleash the people-eating gray goo.
That's a short enough time to make me nervous (what if we get unlucky?), but
long enough to give us a good shot at reaching the end of the window of
vulnerability.
