I don't know about the author, but the book portrays cryonics and the
OP favorably (although much of the story hinges on a cryonics mishap
and the OP is rather tame (!)).

Where I think the novel really works well is the descriptions of the
extreme spans of time and space one protagonist-version has to cross
after an unplanned jump across the universe. Also, it has some fun
ideas about borganisms composed of copies of a single original person.
