Remember that Einstein's theory is a local theory - the curvature of
spacetime at an event is determined by the curvature and mass-energy
nearby. The event horizon isn't a fixed "place", as you fall towards
it it appears to receede and bend in strange ways (there are some fun
demos of this on the net, for example one on Greg Egan's home pages
http://www.netspace.net.au/~gregegan/PLANCK/Planck.html) so there is
no point "next to it" where the theory runs into trouble - locally
everything is great.
